Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred - Workout Diary Part II

review by Emma on January 11, 2011

Here is the latest installment of my 30 Day Shred workout diary where I take you through days 11 to 20 and my progress so far. In case you missed it, Part I of this workout diary can be found here. I spent most of this phase working through Level Two of the DVD but managed to get my fitness up high enough to feel confident having a go at Level Three. Here is my day by day account of life on the Shred!

Day 11:

I am in extreme pain today, especially my bum muscles! The Level Two pendulum squats and lunges are killing me. Also, it’s New Years Day today and I didn’t feel too hot this morning so I saved the workout for the evening and took it a bit easy on the squats.

Day 12:

I weighed myself today and was extremely pleased to see I was 144.6 lb, which means I’ve shifted most of the Christmas weight already and I haven’t actually been watching what I eat at all. My abs were looking super toned when I woke up so with excitement and motivation I blasted through Level Two and felt a massive improvement in my fitness level compared to Day 1.

Day 13:

My weight today was an entire pound less than yesterday at 143.6 and I’m feeling great. Abs are looking good and my legs are starting to get a really lovely shaped muscle showing from knee to hip – not bulky but definitely toning up. I’m genuinely shocked at how my body is responding to this workout considering it’s so short. Thank You Jillian!!!

Day 14:

Was tempted to take a break day today because my bum muscles havn’t stopped aching since my first day of Level Two, however, the ache isn’t too bad so I thought I’d stick it out like a good girl. The workout was great, I didn’t have much time but I managed to squeeze it in before showering and rushing out but was glad I did. I’m addicted to shredding!

Day 15:

I noticed some major improvements in my strength during this workout and find myself finishing the whole round of reps on the hardest variant, which seemed unimaginable at the beginning. In terms of my body, I really wish I had measured myself at the start as well as using weight as a guide because my stomach hasn’t been this flat in months, even before I gained the 10 lb when I quit smoking.

Day 16:

Whizzed through the workout today! Amazed at how I can do the moves that were flooring me on the first try at Level Two (the lunges and the plank squats especially). One of the biggest motivators for me is actually feeling the improvement in my strength and stamina every single day. It’s getting me all fired up about strength workouts and I’m thinking about trying P90X or something similar after my 30 days on this.

Day 17:

Workout done, nothing major to report except my bum is crazy firm and I’m proud of it! Must be those pendulum lunges that I now happen to be awesome at!

Day 18:

Today my weight is 143.0 lb so that’s 6 ounces less than 5 days ago. I don’t feel like that is a lot at all because my body is changing rapidly and it’s not at all reflected in the weight. Normally, the numbers are all I care about but for this workout I really don’t give a damn because I’m gaining muscle and genuinely look toned. I’m tempted to say I look better toned at 143 than I did at 133 with no tone at all. I found a bikini picture of me pre-30 Day Shred when I was 135ish so I might do before and after pics…MAYBE.

Day 19:

I decided that today would be my last day on Level Two so I really went for it and finished it dripping with sweat. It’s amazing how you can ‘do’ your workout sometimes but not realise that you’re just “phoning it in” as Jillian says, until you really go for it another time. I suppose there have been a few days where I should have pushed harder and gotten sweatier than I did.

Day 20:

Level Three is amazing! I loved it! It felt like 19 days on the other levels was building me up to do this level and I rocked it! It was tough in a different way than the previous levels and a really different style of working out. A lot of jumping and weighted movements rather than simple weighted reps. Very exciting, I can’t wait for tomo.

That's it for now, on day 20 and still loving 'the shred'. Don't forget to come back for the last installment in 10 days where I can let you know the final results and my ulitimate opinion! If you're already up for some shredding yourself it's reduced on amazon to £4.99 (or $7.99 if you're in the US) and at this point I'm going to say it's well worth it.
